IT Department, when a job well done has no visibility.

The IT support from technical systems in the enterprise, the area of network and systems management often has little visibility for other departments. This is because if we do our job well, everything works smoothly and if we have not to intervene directly not one see us (the urban legend that we live into basement, away from the world, no communication...).

Very different case is when some inconvenient or computer emergency arises, in this case all are bad faces, rush, pointless questions, problems, etc. It's when you remember us, if we have to solve an issue to get everything back to normal as soon as possible. Therefore the IT service company if it has visible when the job is well done not valued by colleagues or boss. Rare is the company where this area is highly valued and recognized good management we do in the whole enterprise. In this sense, few systems departments of a company who can "sell" well ahead.


Usually has a reputation for working little, spend all day surfing the Internet, reading pages of computer, playing with hardware equipment, tinkering with software, etc.
Because many times the work that must be performed with direct intervention are performed out of hours, to avoid interrupting the workflow. So the time is prolonged or evening or before morning comes. The other colleagues often do not notice that the computer has changed, either faster, a little slower...
I think doing a preventive work, so that the number of incidents recorded decreases, ensures the continuity of work in the company. Here come from optimizing systems, upgrades, backups, etc. All this work is done without the user being aware but that makes his teams always work as expected.
Own service or Outsourced


This invisible work does not mean you cannot be quantified. So depending on the size of the company, its needs and capabilities should opt for a house or outside service. In my opinion should be valued more the use of a mixed system, especially because the work can be quantified and therefore invoice; the number of hours, the time devoted to maintenance interventions, etc. is working but also times of assistance and problem resolution can be agreed.
Both models and outsourced service itself need not be incompatible. Keep a person with a technical background within our company solve the most common or usual cases and may be the best way to have a party coordinator with external business covering those areas where it does not arrive or that profitability could be outsourced .
It's good to keep within the company to a person who is totally aligned with business objectives, which can help make decisions assessing whether proposals from external companies are either not appropriate for the company. And this, well studied, is an important resource savings in the short and especially long term.
